Vinyl Mixing - The Main Line

An Introduction

We strongly recommend that people who want to learn to mix tunes, do it on vinyl records. Digital is too distracting with so many features, and it does the important work for you so you’ll never learn the real basic principles.

It is also our philosophy that no one can teach anyone to be a great DJ. The path is a long and personal one; practice and perseverance are key. As such, the aim of our session is not to turn you into a superstar DJ. If this was possible in two hours, you wouldn't need us…

In contrast to all the other bootcamps and schools out there we’re more concerned with making you comfortable with the concepts & history behind DJing while you get your fingers into it, so that when you leave you’ll understand what it's all about if you want to take it further.

More importantly, you’ll have fun and experience a side of life you’ve probably only seen from a distance, with an instructor who doesn’t just talk the talk, but actually lives the life - working & performing in the music industry. In short, this is an experience you cannot get elsewhere.

Our sessions are two hours, one-on-one inside our actual record store at a cost of $175 (including GST). Participants may bring a friend/parent along to watch.

Doubles sessions are avaialble, they go for three hours and cost $350.

Sessions happen in the Recordstore, and so occurr before of after our opening hours of 11am - 5pm.

Ever wanted to be a DJ but didn't know what was going on in the booth? This DJ mixing taster course will teach you the tricks of the trade with a one-on-one lesson in our inner city record store. Learn beat mixing, blending, scratching and track selection from a DJ with years of experience.

Whether you just want to know how it's done, feel the urge to dabble or are seriously considering DJ'ing as a career path, there are a few fundamental things about mixing which remain relevant across all musical genres and formats.

During this DJ mixing taster course you will learn these things exclusively on vinyl records. Mixing was invented on vinyl and you can only truly understand the basics behind DJ'ing by using it, without any digital readouts to distract or help you. Knowledge and skills gained while mixing vinyl can then be easily transferred to digital media.

You’ll spend your two-hour one-on-one DJ lesson in a real, live record store, surrounded by the latest releases across all the musical genres.

This is your chance to put your hands on real records and mix them, all the while gaining insights into where and how mixing came about. You will learn what BPM is and why certain plugs must go certain ways. You will learn about what the industry calls train-wrecks, crowd pleasers and much, much more.

Your teacher is a working Sydney DJ with years of experience. They will explain not only the mechanics of mixing, but also the ins and outs of gigs, music buying and the DJ lifestyle.

So come and learn DJ mixing with people who are passionate about music, mixing and vinyl and share their knowledge and experience of this exciting world.

Great group of guys at the store and with a vast selection of records. I was a complete beginner coming into it and by the end was scratching and mixing my way to enjoyment. A great experience I wont see myself becoming a DJ anytime soon but was a great music experience.

The DJ mixing taster was unbelievable. It was done at the Record Store in Sydney and the DJ, Lefroy was great. He grabbed a couple of beers and went through everything that i needed to know. He let me keep practicing until i got it right and then moved onto the next part of the lesson. Overall the experience is one i wont forget in a hurry!

The experience was brilliant. often with these things you sit around watching some guy show off his chops and then he calls that a lesson...this was exactly the opposite. i had heaps of time on the decks and got very instructive and logical input from Matt. he very much tailored the lesson to suit my taste and capability. the set up was very relaxed and made me feel very at-home; esp. the beers to help bring the groove! will thoroughly recommend it to my friends
