  • Golden Age Cinema 80 Commonwealth Street Surry Hills, NSW, 2010 Australia (map)

Co-presented by Groovescooter + Foreigndub
“One of the greatest British films made” [Mojo]
Rarely seen on the big screen and boasting a fantastic opening sequence that will have you hooked from the go-get, this groundbreaking 1980 reggae drama centres around a West-London soundsystem fronted by Blue (played by BRINSLEY FORDE of the band ASWAD). In Thatcher’s England, Blue has to tackle issues of race and police brutality, along with worries about his two-timing girlfriend. There’s also an upcoming soundclash with a competing soundsystem run by JAH SHAKA. Life is spiralling towards a climax…

Co-written with MARTIN STALLMAN (QUADROPHENIA), director FRANCO ROSSO’s portrayal of Brixton and surrounds provides a highly authentic dramatisation of a unique culture set in a politically charged time and place. Add to that a soundtrack composed by dub-reggae legend DENNIS BOVELL, plus tracks by JOHNNY CLARKE, I ROY, ASWAD, YABBY U, and you have a cinematic experience that will bow the speakers.

“Must be seen” [N.M.E.]

“Rarely screened… unjustly ignored… Cult classic. Exceptional… when it next hits the big screen, don’t miss out…” [Reggae News]

“A SHAMEFULLY FORGOTTEN MASTERPIECE OF (BRITISH) CINEMA. The magic of the film comes from the brilliantly orchestrated transposition onto celluloid of the socially conscious culture fostered by the sound systems, back in the Caribbeans, and later in England; here the MC is replaced by the filmmaker, the microphone by a camera, and the physicality of the bass is rendered through the livid intensity of the images.” [Electric Sheep]
